DocumentMasters Suck

and unless they're power-hungry bastards, they think it sucks, too!

DocumentMasters are bad, because a single person cannot represent the understanding of the group. But while we know and understand this, we still see DocumentMasters everywhere. ANY time you hear "Oh, person XYZ is in charge of that document", you know there is a DocumentMaster. Sometimes it's a small role, like keeping track of the phone numbers of parents at a school so they can be called when there's an emergency. Or tracking who is bringing what to the church potluck. Sometimes it's big, like the authoring the organization's vision for the new year.

By having a central, authoritative, group-editable set of documents, a wiki empowers a group to come to conclusions that over time will most accurately reflect the group's collective understanding.

This eliminates both the tyranny of a DocumentMaster and eliminates the whines of "backseat copyeditors" - if something is wrong, don't complain or worry that your comments will fall on deaf ears. Jump in and FIX IT.

Is any of this new?
